Now that we’ve featured several of our students we want to highlight the lead instructor, Jerry Johnson. Coach Johnson has been with ASR BJJ and Coach Alex Silva Ruas for over nine years. As the lead instructor of our school he normally runs the morning BJJ class from 9:00-10:00 AM Monday thru Friday, and also the Kids BJJ Monday and Wednesday from 5:00-6:00 PM. Coach Johnson is a kindhearted, gentle, and honest individual. He not only has over nine years of BJJ in his resume he also is a former Chief in the Navy. Coach Johnson brings so much to our school. We took a few minutes to sit down with him and ask him some basic questions. Coach Johnson by far has given one of our most heartfelt and honest interviews it was an honor to be able to have him for our blog.

What is your name?

Jerry Dewayne Johnson

What do you do for a living?

I am a retired Naval Chief Petty Officer, former Police Officer and NJROTC Instructor, and I am currently the lead instructor of ASR, Alex Silva Ruas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

How long have you been practicing ASR Jiu-Jitsu?

I have been studying ASR BJJ for over nine years.

What is your belt Rank?

Brown Belt

Do you have any family members that practice with you?

No. My family has other hobbies but they fully support my career and passion of BJJ. They are one of the main reasons I have the passion and drive for this art.

What has ASR Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu taught you and how has it changed your life?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has taught me many lessons. How to be unselfish, patient, and also about inner strength. It has also taught me how to let go of the past and focus on the future. I learned to be a servant to others through ASR BJJ. It literally saved my life as well as my family. The most treasured part of my journey with BJJ has been gaining a true brother for life.

What are your goals with BJJ?

My goals are to reach my highest potential mentally, physically, and spiritually. Too often people give belt ranks as goals, which is okay, however for me it is different. It is about the spiritual journey of one’s self.

Who is your favorite Martial Artist?

Bruce Lee. I learned emotional content from him.

What is your favorite food?

Fried Chicken, Collared Greens, and Corn bread.

How did you discover ASR BJJ and Coach Alex Silva Ruas?

I saw a UFC 1 and realized BJJ was the ultimate martial art to learn. After many years of searching for the one thing that I needed most. I found Coach Alex Silva Ruas and ASR BJJ. I showed up one day and watched a class for 15 minutes, told Coach Ruas I would be back on Monday and I haven’t missed a class since and that was over nine years ago.

Coach Johnson with some of his students

Coach Johnson speaks highly of not only BJJ itself but of his home gym and school ASR Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is currently the highest ranked male student under Coach Ruas’ tutelage. He never fails to make an impression on his current students, new students, and ASR family. Many of us have trained under him and owe a lot of our success to him as well as Coach Alex Silva Ruas. He is always coming in shouting “OPA!” to everyone (Opa in Portuguese means “WOW!”) to get them hyped up. He always offers hugs to anyone and everyone. It is hard to find a coach with so much spirit and love for his art and his students.
